To contribute to our Society’s success through the use of an advanced, comprehensive, and extensive educational foundation encompassing medicine and biomedical research in the context of rural, under-served, and disadvantaged communities. I plan to champion local communities throughout the rural United States with a particular emphasis on serving Native American populations in conjunction with participating at the forefront of Medicine and Science. My life’s mission is to advance Humanity’s understanding of health and disease with the goal of improving clinical outcomes, developing novel therapies, imaging methods, and treatments.
My upbringing and community involvement in the Navajo Nation allowed me to witness and experience the multi-faceted issues and problems in the rural U.S. Growing up in the Navajo Nation in Fort Defiance, Arizona, I gained a first-hand experience of the socioeconomic issues facing Native American communities, including the Diné People. Major macroscale problems in our local community include lack of access to running water, electricity, modern housing, and most importantly, an improved access to a healthcare system. These problems prevent the Native American populations from obtaining modern medical care and preventive measures. Similarly, a deficit in world-class, culturally competent, and science-driven family physicians makes accessing healthcare even more difficult for Native Americans. My rural life experiences have provided me with a diverse perspective on the many problems currently faced in many rural communities. I want to positively affect the local community by promoting community engagement, supporting community-wide initiatives aimed at healthy lifestyle changes, and advocating for establishing community health centers, tele-medicine, and using mobile clinics. I firmly believe that active engagement with the community will be the first step in building a science-driven, patient-centered medical home model promoting patient-physician relationships.
Graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of New Mexico in 2021, I achieved an exceptional academic record, reflecting my commitment to biological sciences. My undergraduate journey encompassed a comprehensive exploration of Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, General/Organic Chemistry, and Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems. These studies provided profound insights into cellular processes, genetic mechanisms, immune defenses, physiological systems, and the chemical foundations of life. Proficiency in mathematical methodologies complemented my biological sciences background, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to scientific inquiry and preparing me to tackle complex challenges at the intersection of science and medicine.
